Hogla is a bush-like plant that grows along the river banks and canals of Bangladesh. Artisans dry the hogla grass and use a combination of hand and machine stitching to create an organic yet structured looking basket. The hogla provides texture and an earthy tone which will naturally complements any greenery.

    About the Maker Prokritee

    Prokritee is a fair trade organization whose mission is to develop the social and economic capacity of poor, rural, disadvantaged women in Bangladesh by creating productive employment opportunities and sustainable linkages to world market. They provide capacity training to their employees, allow for democratic input in the production process, permit the right to organize, and ensure the health and safety of their employees. Particularly in a country where women can be marginalized, they take extra measures to not discriminate against gender, parental status, pregnancy, breastfeeding needs, caste, national origin, religion, HIV status, or age.

    Especially for many women who have been widowed and had no means of providing their family with a sustainable income, Prokritee has enabled them with skills training and they can now provide for themselves.
